Basics of how SME Funding-i works

General Questions

SME Funding-i makes peer-to-peer (P2P) financing simple and transparent for both investors and businesses. This section answers common questions about what P2P financing is, how the process works, and who's eligible.

What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P) financing?

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) financing is an online platform that connects investors directly with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) seeking business funding. It removes intermediaries such as banks, enabling faster access to capital while offering investors attractive, consistent returns.

Is SME Funding-i regulated?

Yes. SME Funding-i operates under the approval and supervision of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). All P2P financing platforms in Malaysia are regulated to ensure transparency, accountability, and investor protection.

How does the P2P process work?

SMEs apply for financing through SME-Funding-i. Once approved, their campaigns are listed for investors to fund. Upon full funding, the SMEs receive the capital and repay investors over time with profit.

Who can use SME-Funding-i?

SME Funding-i serves two main groups: (1) Investors seeking higher-yield, diversified portfolios. (2) SMEs looking for fast, Shariah-compliant business financing solutions.

What are Investment Notes?

Investment Notes are financial instruments (similar to short-term loan agreements) that represent investment opportunities between investors and SMEs on the SME Funding-i platform. Each note has its own risk and return profile, offering flexibility and transparency to investors.

How is my personal and financial data protected?

SME Funding-i uses bank-grade encryption and complies fully with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) to safeguard all user data and financial information.

What happens if an issuer fails to repay?

In the event of a default, SME Funding-i will initiate recovery procedures, including reminders, restructuring options, or legal recovery through appointed agencies. Investors are kept updated throughout the entire process.

Where are investor funds kept?

All investor funds are held in trust accounts managed by a licensed trustee company, fully separated from SME-Funding-i's operational funds to ensure maximum protection.

What is a PEP and am I a PEP?

A PEP (Politically Exposed Person) is someone who holds or has held a high public position, such as a government official, politician, or senior officer in a state-owned company. If you are a PEP, additional due diligence requirements may apply to your account registration.

SME Funding-i keeps your data and investments secure

Security & Compliance FAQs

SME Funding-i prioritises the security of your data and investments through robust system controls, governance frameworks, and strict compliance with applicable regulations.

How is SME Funding-i Shariah-compliant?

All financing products strictly adhere to Islamic finance principles — free of interest (riba), excessive uncertainty (gharar), and prohibited activities (haram). A dedicated Shariah Advisory Committee supervises and approves each transaction to ensure full compliance.

What Shariah contracts are used?

We primarily use Commodity Murabahah (Tawarruq), a widely accepted Islamic financing structure. The contract ensures all profit is derived from a legitimate trade transaction rather than interest.

What industries are prohibited?

Businesses involved in alcohol, gambling, conventional banking/insurance, tobacco, pork products, weapons manufacturing, or any other industries deemed haram under Islamic law are not eligible for financing on our platform.

Who is your Shariah Advisor?

We work with a dedicated Shariah Advisory Committee to ensure all products, contracts, and processes comply with Islamic finance principles. Our Shariah partner is Masryef.

Does being Shariah-compliant affect non-Muslim investors?

Not at all. Shariah-compliant financing simply means the structures are transparent, ethical, and free from exploitative interest. Non-Muslim investors are equally welcome to participate and benefit from these structures.

How does SME Funding-i protect against fraud?

We conduct thorough KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) checks on all users. Advanced fraud detection systems monitor platform activity. Any suspicious activity is reported to the relevant authorities.
